The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped (KSH) is a member of numerous international organizations operating in the disability field and serves as a regional hub for some of them.

Rehabilitation International

Member Since 1996

It is an international network for persons with disabilities and works to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities. Its membership has exceeded (1,000) organizations from (96) countries around the world. It was founded through voluntary efforts contributed by individuals and entities with the aim of serving persons with disabilities and securing their rights. It is worth noting that this organization, which is a pioneer in the field of disability, has specialists capable of developing necessary programs and studies concerning disability in all areas.

The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped has been a member of Rehabilitation International since 1976, and some of its members hold prominent positions within the organization. Ms. Munira Khaled Al-Mutawwa' – President of the Society – holds the position of National Secretary of Rehabilitation International for the State of Kuwait, Vice President of the Rehabilitation International Arab Region Committee, and President of the International Committee on Access and Technology for the Arab Region. The former Director of the Society served as Vice President of Rehabilitation International for the Arab Region from 2016 and has been a member of the Selection Committee since 1996.

It has called for promoting the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities and their families, integrating them into society, and assisting and supporting relevant organizations and individuals. The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped joined the membership of Inclusion International in 1976.

Makaton Foundation

Member Since 1988

Makaton is a language program specifically designed to develop communication, language, and literacy skills for children and adults who have learning and communication difficulties. This program was introduced to the State of Kuwait in 1988 by Mrs. Sabika Saad Al-Jasser – Chairperson of the Society's Board of Directors – after being translated and adapted to suit the Kuwaiti and Arabic environment. The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped has established the Makaton Kuwait and Middle East Center under its umbrella.

It is a specialized non-profit organization that provides educational arts programs and activities in many fields such as visual arts, music, dance, drama, and creative writing for students and artists with disabilities.

The organization aims to introduce society to persons with disabilities through their artistic and creative contributions, highlight their talents, and break down the barriers preventing their inclusion in society through various artistic activities such as festivals, exhibitions, and international educational programs. The organization highlights the important role of the arts in the early education process, as it has helped children develop their verbal and written skills as communication tools, which enhances their social skills and allows them to build a strong foundation for learning. The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped joined VSA in 1994.
